Near-mean-field behavior in the generalized Burridge-Knopoff earthquake model with variable-range stress transfer.

Simple models of earthquake faults are important for understanding the mechanisms for their observed behavior in nature, such as Gutenberg-Richter scaling. Because of the importance of long-range interactions in an elastic medium, we generalize the Burridge-Knopoff slider-block model to include variable range stress transfer. We find that the Burridge-Knopoff model with long-range stress transf...

Simulation of the Burridge-Knopoff model of earthquakes with variable range stress transfer.

Simple models of earthquake faults are important for understanding the mechanisms for their observed behavior, such as Gutenberg-Richter scaling and the relation between large and small events, which is the basis for various forecasting methods. Although cellular automaton models have been studied extensively in the long-range stress transfer limit, this limit has not been studied for the Burri...

Exponential distributions in a mechanical model for earthquakes.

We study statistical distributions in a mechanical model for an earthquake fault introduced by Burridge and Knopoff [R. Burridge and L. Knopoff, Bull. Seismol. Soc. Am. 57, 341 (1967)]. Our investigations on the size (moment), time duration and number of blocks involved in an event show that exponential distributions are found in a given range of the paramenter space. This occurs when the two k...

CONTROL OF CHAOS IN A DRIVEN NON LINEAR DYNAMICAL SYSTEM

We present a numerical study of a one-dimensional version of the Burridge-Knopoff model [16] of N-site chain of spring-blocks with stick-slip dynamics. Our numerical analysis and computer simulations lead to a set of different results corresponding to different boundary conditions. It is shown that we can convert a chaotic behaviour system to a highly ordered and periodic behaviour by making on...

Recent numerical results for a model describing dispersive transport in rice piles are explained by mapping the model to the depinning transition of an interface that is dragged at one end through a random medium. The average velocity of transport vanishes with system size L as < v >∼ L2−D ∼ L−0.23, and the avalanche size distribution exponent τ = 2 − 1/D ≃ 1.55, where D ≃ 2.23 from interface d...
